【About the brand】

Maison Margiela is a fashion brand established in Paris in 1988 by Belgian designer Martin Margiela.

At the time of establishment, the brand name was Maison Martin Margiela.

Often referred to as disruptive and experimental, Maison is a luxury brand with a full line in fashion and design, from haute couture to women's and men's pret-a-porter, leather goods, shoes, accessories, fine jewelry and fragrances.

The new methods Margiela continues to propose, such as reconstructing and redefining clothing and unusual show styles, have influenced many people and are said to be one of the most influential brands in the history of fashion.

【About the Designer】

Founder, Martin Margiela, was born in 1959 in Limbourg, Belgium.

He studied drawing at the age of 16 and entered the prestigious Antwerp Academy of Fine Arts at the age of 18. During his time at the Academy, he also worked with six designers, later known as the Antwerp Six, whom he worked with since his school days.

*Antwerp Six*

A collective term for six fashion designers: Ann Demeulemeester, Walter Van Beirendonck, Dirk Van Saene, Dirk Bikkembergs, Dries Van Noten and Marina Yee. These six plus Margiela are sometimes called the Antwerp Seven.

After graduating from the Academy, Martin Margiela studied under fashion master Jean Paul Gaultier for 3 years before becoming independent from the studio where he founded Maison Martin Margiela (now Maison Margiela) in 1988.

Often referred to as the "invisible man of the fashion world," Martin Margiela always kept a certain distance from the public and the media and kept a low profile.

He rarely gave interviews, and during his years as a designer, he rarely exposed himself.

Margiela is also famous for using "we" instead of "I" in the first person in interviews and other responses and emphasizes that creative activities are always done in teams. After Margiela left the brand, until Mr. John Galliano took office, the brand was managed by a team design. This is a result of the brand management with the team in mind.

【Brand history and transition】

In 1988, he established his own label "Maison Martin Margiela" in Paris, France.

In 2002, the company received investment, manufacturing and store development support from Diesel's Renzo Rosso group companies. From here, the number of stores has increased globally, and maisons have grown approximately 5 times in the 6 years since 2002.

In 2008, he held an archive exhibition for his 20 years as a Maison Martin Margiela (spring/summer 1989 - spring/summer 2009) at a Tokyo store. Presenting jewelry collection in collaboration with Damiani.

In 2009, Renzo Rosso said to the media, "Martin Margiela was not involved in the design and the design team took over the Maison." , Real retirement of Margiela

Numbers have meaning, and each means a line.

【About MM6 Maison Margiela】

MM6 Maison Margiela is another collection from Maison Margiela.

This brand is positioned as a contemporary brand of Maison Margiela, and is set at a relatively affordable price compared to the price range of conventional collection brands.

MM6 is a collection of shoes and accessories, in addition to garments, that adds a new interpretation to wearable street wear and is sometimes depicted with humor.

【About Hermes】

Margiela was appointed as Hermes's ladies pret-a-porter designer from the autumn/winter of 1998 – 1999 to the spring/summer of 2004.

Margiela's appointment as designer of Hermes, a brand that can be said to be the pinnacle of luxury brands, was a surprising event in the fashion world at that time.

The products from the period Margiela made Hermes are still very popular, and there are still many fans who are looking for a masterpiece that was released in several years called the "Margiela period".

One of the reasons for its popularity is the release of hybrid designs and products that combine the elegance of Hermes with the challenging design typical of Margiela.

*The representative item of the Margiela period, "Vareuse

This is the most famous detail item among Hermes designed by Margiela, and the item with a deep V-neck that looks like a large cut on the chest is commonly called "Vareuse".

The idea of "For women to be able to put on and take off without worrying about hair or makeup" is also wonderful.

【Collaboration with H & M】

In 2012, the collaboration between H & M and "Maison Martin Margiela" was released and made the fashion world lively.

The most representative item in Margiela's archive is updated in shape and material, and is available in men's and women's clothes and accessories.

The title was "RE-EDITION" and the items were organized under five concepts: "SHAPE & VOLUME," "OVERSIZED," "PROCESS OF TAILORING," "AMBIGUITY," and "TRANSFORMATION.".

Many people picked up Margiela's iconic items because they were affordable.

【About the white label and four white stitches】

Speaking of Maison Margiela, the characteristic tag with four corners sewn on has a strong image.

As a recommendation against the flood of logos, Margiela chose to "insist on anonymity" rather than influence consumers with a recognizable brand name.

The four white stitches with the label temporarily attached were meant to be "taken from behind," but now it's very interesting that the stitches are a kind of logo that symbolizes the brand.

The label is white and solid or engraved with numbers from ‘ 0 ’ to ‘ 23 ’.

【About Margiela's AIDS T-shirt】

A typical Maison Margiela product is AIDS T-shirts.

Since it was first introduced in the fall/winter collection in 1994, it has been available every season.

The T-shirts bear the slogan "There is more work to do to fight AIDS, but wearing this T-shirt is a good start.".

A portion of the proceeds from sales of the T-shirts have been donated to ‘ AIDES ’, a French organization established to combat the HIV virus and AIDS and to support patients.
