{{widget type="Fascinate\\Blog\\Block\\Widget\\TableOfContents"}}Let's start with a brief introduction to the brand.
OLUBIYI THOMAS
Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Blubiyi Thomas worked as a patterner for Alexander McQueen after graduating from Central St. Martins in 2013.
They studied tailoring under designer Sarah Burton and worked in design at Siki Im in NY before becoming creative director at De Rien in London.
They became independent from De Rien in 2015 and launched their own brand, releasing the spring/summer collection in June 2016.
Reflecting the designer's own Nigerian and Scottish background, the brand is about multiculturalism and hidden identity, traditional British male tailoring and its connection to African culture, using carefully selected sustainable textiles and focusing on skilled craftsmanship, cutting and technique, all handmade in London.
The style is characterized by a vertical tailored silhouette with exquisite draping and layering, and an avant-garde style with uncut garments.
It aims to redefine historical interpretations of clothing and fabrics, while remaining completely modern, and to build a fusion and connection between African culture and post-British colonialism.
OLUBIYI THOMAS - 23SS collection
OLUBIYI THOMAS uses only vintage fabrics or traditional African handmade fabrics.
The items we received this time include deadstock fabrics made for tablecloths in the 1960s, and fabrics that were handmade for the entire process, from the thread making stage to the finishing.
This time we have selected eight carefully selected items among them.
Take a look at the designer's interwoven worldview, which skillfully interweaves his two roots: traditional British male tailoring and African culture.

double Breasted work jacket
This work jacket is made of dead stock tablecloth used in the 1960s.
OLUBIYI THOMAS does not purchase new fabrics, so the textiles used are basically all indigenous West African textiles or deadstock antique fabrics.
The design is inspired by the 50's rail road jackets of Scotland, where the designer emigrated from Nigeria and spent his boyhood.
wide leg kickback drawstring trousers
These trousers can be worn with the 3204.5 Double Breasted Work Jacket.
This model is also inspired by West African pirate pants. He originally worked as a patterner at Alexander McQueen, and has a strong passion for set-ups. We recommend wearing it in a set-up.
Pleated Bib Shirt
This model is made of dead stock curtain fabric from the 1950s.
It features a unique floral jacquard that does not exist today.
Wearing a long shirt under a jacket and layering it is a typical OLUBIYI THOMAS styling.
The pleats on the front and the rather long sleeves are inspired by the details of Victorian shirts.
Model 180cm/58kg. Wearing size: Shirt/Size 2.
bucket Hat
Combination hat made of dead stock cotton linen and upcycled cowhide. Hats are always proposed every season and are an essential item in OLUBIYI THOMAS' stylings.
kimono Back Cardigan #1
This is an iconic model in the OLUBIYI THOMAS collection. As the name suggests, this item is inspired by the Japanese kimono.
The textiles used are indigenous to Mali, a country in West Africa, the designer's home area.
This textile, one of the designer's most cherished textiles, originally had a width of only 10 cm to 15 cm, and was sewn together one by one.
Each piece is hand-dyed with mud, hand-spun, and hand-woven, and each piece has a different pattern.
wide Leg Drawstring Trousers #1
Trousers using the same textile as 3207.7 Kimono Back Cardigan.
These cropped pants are an essential item in any OLUBIYI THOMAS coordination.
Inspired by the pirate pants of West Africa, the designer's native area.
Model 180cm/58kg. Wearing size: Jacket/Size 2, Shirt/Size 2, Pants/Size 2.
kimono Back Cardigan #2.
This is the kimono back cardigan introduced earlier in a different size and pattern.
wide Leg Drawstring Trousers #2
This is the wide leg drawstring trousers introduced earlier in a different size and pattern.
The shape is exactly the same, but as you can see, the pattern is different.
Model 181cm/62kg. Wearing size: Jacket/Size 3, Pants/Size 3.
