Maison Margiela's masterpiece "Tabi Ankle Boots
This is Kobayashi, I am newly transferred from the Kitahorie store in Osaka due to the renewal of the store at the beginning of this month. I would like to introduce the Tabi boot, which is one of Maison Margiela's signature products.
I remember when I was in high school, I saw a female model wearing these boots in a fashion magazine and thinking, "What kind of strange shoes are these? As my sensibilities had not caught up while I was young.
I was 20 years old when I first picked up these boots.
About 10 years ago, I was wearing brands such as Rick Owens and Gareth Pugh, which could be said to be the pioneers of genderless, and I only wore heeled boots at that time, but I wanted to see this Margiela Tabi boot in person, so I went to a store in Nakasaki, Osaka, to see the actual product.
The Tabi design is attractive not only for its design but also for its comfort.
As far as I remember, there were no Tabi boots available in men's sizes at the time, and I wore a size 41 with an 8cm heel, which was just barely available in women's sizes.
In terms of comfort, they were very comfortable compared to other men's heel boots I wore at the time.
Like the original Tabi, the upper leather is thin and supple with a sock-like fit, and at the same time the front leather sole is thin, making it extremely lightweight.
Furthermore, the thin front sole means that the feel of the ground is easily transmitted and the sole returns well, making it easy to step out.
Separated thumbs help ease the forward weight-bearing load characteristic of heel boots, as well as provide greater stability against side-to-side movement for a snug fit.
The upper leather is made of camel leather, which is lightweight and durable, and its fine, astringent warp and just the right amount of gloss, which is not too assertive, evoke a sense of Japanese elegance.
Classic hook-and-loop design with a sense of respect for Japan
Cylindrical heels that remind you of the circle surrounding the number on the calendar tag are thick and stable, and a heel of around 6cm is the perfect height to match a dressy look, so we recommend styling with slacks.
The lining is lined with smooth lamb leather, and the detachable mechanism is not modern like zippers or lace, but a hook like the original tabi.
One of the more enigmatic designers from Antwerp, Martin Margiela, is rumored to be living in Kyoto.
The design incorporates the details of the traditional Japanese footwear, tabi, to create an item that feels respect for Japan, while being a leather shoe designed to match clothes.
JAN-JAN VAN ESSCHE, a brand I always recommend, is also a designer who graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, as well as a collection inspired by ancient Japanese folk costumes.
From the perspective of Antwerp designers, who have produced talented and unique designers from Antwerp 6, including Margiela, the Japanese culture we live in may be very inspiring.
There are other tabi design shoes available, and even if you're not into heel boots, you should definitely try them out in stores and get a taste of this air.
